Thanks for the information about the book signing disaster. You told it with great humor and humility! We are about to embark on our first book signing tour in May 2010 and this is helpful information for reality check. Thanks so much.

Lisa,
Thank you, for the tips. I will be having my first book signing in May and you have given me a great insight and tapped into my greatest fear.

Thanks.

Lisa,
This is amazing! Thanks for being authentic, even in, uh... the opposite of success. As a first time author, I dread the dead book signing. Great stuff for me to chew on.
Thanks.

I'm that bane of authors, an avid book reader who buys few books--I use the library instead. In the past I used to by non-fiction--never fiction--and now as an octogenarian, I live in such a small place I have no permanent shelves for even non-fiction.

On the other hand I DO buy books as gifts quite regularly--easy to ship to children and grandchildren--and the author's signature and message makes it a special gift.

So, i don't approach book signings at book stores, even though I would love to--especially if I've already read the book--because i feel obligated then to buy.

Mary-Frances: Thanks for the lovely comment. Book tours are expensive and risky in term of return on investment, so it pays to define who your readers are and where they can be found. And then go there.

Hi Lisa,
Sadly, I've heard this story before from other authors, but you tell it so well! I felt like I was right there with you. Loved the tips especially the first two. I think you're so right about going where the energy is. Thanks for sharing and turning your bad experience into an opportunity to strategize.
